Ex-president Trump has once again announced he would urge FIFA to relocate 2026 World Cup events from a host city based on that city's political climate, with the Boston region now being the latest urban area to receive such threats from the American leader. Furthermore, Trump remarked he would consider parallel steps against Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Games due to potential public safety risks.
While Trump lacks direct legal authority to personally cancel either event, he can exert influence the organizing committees overseeing each competition to shift locations.
His remarks were made during a press event with Argentinian president Milei, who was present in the executive mansion following the disclosure of a $20 billion rescue package for the Argentine country. At the end of the event, a media member questioned Trump about a recent “street takeover” in Boston where law enforcement were attacked and a police vehicle was burned. The correspondent also wondered if such events could lead to the revocation of tournament responsibilities for the 48-team World Cup.
“It's possible to take them away,” Trump stated regarding the FIFA World Cup matches, set to be held at the Massachusetts arena. “She is poor … she’s radical left, and they are taking over areas of Boston. It's a pretty big claim, don't you think?”
Unauthorized gatherings, a digitally organized trend where large crowds gather on public avenues during nighttime to engage in dangerous driving, have been a frequent nuisance in US urban areas since the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. Recent similar events have turned violent in the region, notably in the city. Nevertheless, these occurrences are typically not considered associated with any specific partisan agenda.
“When a mayor is failing, and I feel exist unsafe conditions, I will call the FIFA head, who is outstanding, and tell him it should be shifted to a different city,” the former president commented on Tuesday. “He will do that. He might not prefer to do it, but he would comply. Very easily, he’d do it.”
Gianni Infantino has publicly acknowledged his efforts to be closely connected with the US leader before the 2026 event, scheduled to be hosted in numerous American venues across the America along with a couple in Canada and three in Mexico. The organization's leader has been present at multiple Oval Office gatherings, had Trump deliver the Club World Cup award after that tournament’s final, and has even postponed his the group's assembly to accompany Trump on a trip to the Arab region this year.
Despite this, Trump from suggesting the removal of FIFA World Cup matches from additional American venues. Recently, the Washington city and San Francisco were comparable comments, with Trump asserting both urban centers were “governed by ideological activists who are clueless what they are doing,” while criticizing the safety level of both areas and suggesting that events could be relocated.
FIFA vice-president Montagliani rejected Trump’s assertions when he reacted days later at a conference in England.
“It’s our competition, our responsibility, the organization determines such choices,” Montagliani said. “Respectfully to national heads, soccer is transcends political figures and the game will outlast their regime and their government. It's the essence of this sport, that it is transcends one leader and bigger than a nation.”
During the event, Trump’s reply to a inquiry about the Massachusetts city extended to a parallel statement regarding the LA Olympic event.
“When I perceived the city was not going to be adequately ready, I will shift it to a different city if I had to,” he remarked. “Regarding that event I’d probably have to obtain a different kind of approval, but we will proceed.”
Official consent Trump mentioned would must come from the Olympic governing body. The leader, Kirsty Coventry, was elected to her role in this year and has not yet hold a public appearance with him, although she stated that she desires a discussion with him at eventually.
The former president also criticized California governor Newsom’s management of the LA wildfires, stating that a comparable scenario could lead to the cancellation of the Games.
“When he refuses to cooperate, we’re gonna have to be strict,” Trump commented.
The warning was similarly unambiguous for Boston.
“The city must improve their situation,” Trump stated. “That is I will say.”
