UN Removes Sanctions on President of Syria Ahead of Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip next week.

Sharaa was named interim leader after leading a rebel offensive that removed the former president in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of domestic strife.

The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" after Assad's removal.

He had been subject to United Nations restrictions as the leader of the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. America delisted HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations this past July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the sanctions, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and allied countries for assisting the country and its population."

Upcoming White House Meeting

President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.

After the meeting, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot for national reconciliation".

Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country until he severed ties in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting does not represent his initial visit to the United States in the current year. During September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to address the global assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.

Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position across international circles" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
