US Strike Claims Lives of Four in Alleged Drug Boat Incident off Venezuelan Shoreline

Per the announcement from US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a US strike killed four people during a mission against a vessel allegedly transporting narcotics offshore close to Venezuela.

This action occurred just a day after US officials notified Congress that the country was entering a "non-international armed conflict" with narco-trafficking organizations.

This marks at least the fourth extraordinary and controversial operation conducted by American military outside American waters over the past month.

Details of the Military Operation

The defense secretary stated that the vessel was struck as it was carrying substantial amounts of narcotics destined for America, posing a threat to public health.

“Intelligence assessments definitively verified the vessel’s involvement in drug trafficking, identifying those aboard as narco-terrorists using established smuggling routes,” Hegseth said in a social media post.

The defense secretary also claimed that the boat had links to terrorist groups, a classification introduced in a confidential memo sent to lawmakers.

Juridical and Political Background

US officials have notified Congress regarding its view that cartels as “non-state armed groups” and their actions smuggling drugs represent an armed assault on the US.

This notification included a classified briefing with lawmakers from the Senate defense panel, held recently.

White House representatives attempted to justify the strikes by citing the president’s constitutional authority, which allow the use of military force for self-protection during confined conflicts.

Previous Operations and Global Response

Prior to this strike, American military had conducted strikes against three vessels in Caribbean waters, which led to 17 fatalities and sparking widespread international outrage.

The defense secretary reiterated that these strikes “will continue” until “threats to US citizens persist”.

Administrative Changes and Supervision

Officials have allegedly strengthened a White House security body to operate separately within the executive branch, a change unlike prior governments where it reported to the national security adviser.

This restructuring has influenced the planning and execution of these military actions, with some officials learning of strikes only hours before their execution.

Despite the administration’s claims, juridical specialists point out that designating cartels as terrorist entities does not provide additional authority for using lethal force absent concrete evidence connecting them with a foreign government.

So far, US officials has yet to offer such evidence concerning the alleged infiltration of the Venezuelan government.
